RE: Campgrounds in Newfounland

Start with Diann's pics from2007 Tour NB, NS, Newfoundland, and back again I think their MH will match yours. :C

RE: Canadian National Parks

I think we should be ok as long as we are talking about letting Parks administration know what we like and don't like, but forum rules say we can't discuss politics. So, no mention of any elected souls at any level and we can talk all we want. Ok, I guess I haven't pushed the right buttons before. The title of the site, Park Listens Panel is a good one. Thanks for that, Powder Pig. I too want to see my user fees coming back to the parks. I know user or local feedback can have a big influence. I lived in Newfoundland for 24.5 years. When Gros Morne NP was set up the Visitor Centre was put on the north side of Bonne Bay in Rocky Harbour. Residents on the south side spent several years building up a campaign and finally succeeded in getting The Discovery Centre built near Woody Point. There is very little overlap between the interpretations in both centres. If you have visited one, you will gain more from visiting the other. It's another good example of how important citizen input can be. :C

RE: Canadian National Parks

Johny_Maple: ### Services are fine and I don't think they were any more crowded the last time around than before. FWIW, we disliked Kouchibouguac this time around; different section of the campground which was not wooded very much. Re: Elk Island, we had forgotten how long a drive it is into the campground from the entrance. In addition, the info centre was open only on certain days and with short hours so the last time we were there, we couldn't buy books, videos, see any displays, etc. The best visitors' centres we found were at Riding Mountain and Prince Albert. Pukaskwa's is pretty good too with the local First Nations presence quite evident as well as a comprehensive history of the area. Fundy's visitor's centre isn't shabby either and the nearby village of Alma is a treat. I too was disappointed in the layout and response to demand at Kouchibougac NP the last time I was there. It really is too bad when a well used park doesn't get the staffing and the support, with say an interpretive visitors centre. Anml_341 These improvements sound like the kind I like, the ones that help visitors see parts of the park that are why it was designated as a place to preserve, yet spread out the visitors so people aren't on top of each other. Powder Pig I have been 'taken to' both Banff and Lake Louise and have been hearing about the pressure on both of these places to become some other thing than 'preserving natural wonders of Canada'. Indeed I've heard the term 'park' questioned as a suitable name. Why, well the advent of 'amusement parks' or the mini golf course type place, which are the opposite of natural wonders. I don't have a dictionary that gives me years of use or first use, but I think early meanings go back to natural areas reserved for certain uses, either on state owned land in rural or urban areas. That would make the amusement park the Johnny come lately. Tell us how to find the online surveys please!!! That's one thing I've not looked for, even though I have written letters to parks doing what I found unpleasant. I also know of national parks that seem to pinch on services and upkeep. That is not what we bargained for. I don't mind staying in small sites, I can do so for a night or so. But I'm wondering if you're aware of any way to help these 'ignored', poor upkeep national parks find more $ and a greater role in the park scheme of things. :C

RE: Newfoundland Whales & Icebergs

To see RobandDi's most recent trip to NL, start in Diann's Space at this album,, then click on photos to move forward in each section. They did a fair bit of boondocking. Last year the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador started adding hydro to the Provincial Park mix. check with their tourism site for more up to date information. http://www.icebergfinder.com/ opens up on May 1. That will tell you when icebergs begin moving into navigable waters. Timing: The Queen's Birthday Weekend, which will be May 16 - 18, 2009, for Canada Post, is the traditional first weekend of camping in Newfoundland. If you get up to Newfoundland by that time, you will see your best icebergs. Any year's iceberg crop varies considerably. 2007 was the best of all the 24.5 years I lived in Newfoundland. But I would say go before mid-July. There are things that don't open until June, but many do. L'Anse aux Meadows on the Northern Peninsula is on my list of must must must sees. So to is the Cape St. Mary's Bird Sanctuary on the Avalon Peninsula. :C

RE: Canadian National Parks

That sounds very much like what I will be looking for when I head west in a year or so. What else would they like to be able to do for users? & what size are the camp sites? :C

RE: Canadian National Parks

Howdy, j_m, long time no see post. Where did you take the rig this past summer? You know I moved. & the humidity where I am now doesn't help the arthritis either. I could do with more arid atmosphere of either Labrador or the Prairies. You certainly have visited a lot our national parks. How can you compare them from when you first visited to your most recent visit. Have services stood up? Are they more crowded? How about visitors centres to help understand each park's special place or reason for being made a park? C-172-AV8R are the parks you've visited been in the west? Do you hike much? Or canoe in them? :C

RE: Image Test...??

Ok, that works. Now, why I asked that. Julie Mik is among the 20%, whose PB hosted pics I can see. On her site, she has done that for me quite a number of times. & it has worked. But for that 80%, when they give me a link or an album url, I can only see the thumbnails. So, chances are if you were to host via PB, I'd be able to see it. Still a solution to the glitch must rest with PB. :C

OH, OH, OH Just one Tom, just the car and the 4 guys @ the El Passo gas station. Do me a favour and put the image location for the one I can't see here as a url. It's a test of the wee differences with different posters. TKX :C

RE: Image Test...??

Tom,. The only pictures I see are the ones you have posted. I see no red x's or anything at all. I believe I once mentioned the problem I have with 80% or so of PhotoBucket hosted pics. I suspected this was one of those and that I might just as well document it for you here. I probably also said I believe I am not the only one with this problem. :C

Canadian National Parks

I see things a being a bit slow, so I'm going to try to stir some discussion (before Xmas, rather than after). I think of Canada's National Parks as places designated for protection in their natural beauty as a way to preserve some of Canada's natural heritage. & as a way to share that heritage with the planet. So, to get things going, a few questions: A few questions. - What do you like about National Parks? - What do you not like about National Parks? - How do you use National Parks? - If you don't use, NPs then why please? & I don't see any reason to limit ourselves to just those questions. I won't be upset if you say something very different about Canada's National Parks. :C

RE: Border crossing ..Port Huron/Buffalo WITH a pet ... ??

More to the south than up here. I wasn't trying to sneak us into things politically, but you will recall the passport for return by land is slated for implementation in 2009. Given a new administration down south there could be a different outlook. Changes are apt to come from 1) a change in the party governing and 2) changes external to either country. Remember the Canadian Border Services Agency made some changes and started asking for proof of citizenship in response to US changes. :C

RE: Calgary, Alberta

Calgary is a very sprawling city. It is not far, driving goes from two very different spaces: Edmonton and that monster mall, the West Edmonton Mall and the Rocky Mountains with a number of national parks or other mountainous, and very scenic spaces The biggest and best know city event is the Calgary Stampede. You might also want to take a look at my articles on RVing in Canada I freely admit that because I moved last summer some links need updating. :C

Yep, I also want to know. & I'm taking bets, the whole outlook on regs going south could change with a change in government. MasterBoondocker, do we assume you are copasetic on current regs. Canadian Food Inspection Agency :C

RE: Is It Just Me...Or...??

In Firefox, there are no extra clicks, unless you want to double check their spell check to google, as one does for English in countries other than the US. :C

RE: Is It Just Me...Or...??

If you have Firefox, that has spell check. If you have IE, it too has a spell check. Let the techies give there time to items not covered elsewhere. :)

RE: Dogs Love Snow!

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g137/swaninwa/AngSnow2006_framed.jpg Dog tags ring, are you listenin'? In the yard, snow is glistenin'. It's yellow NOT white, I've been here tonight, Marking up my winter wonderland. Smell that tree? That's my fragrance. Keeps away, wandering vagrants; Avoid where I pee, it's MY property! Marking up my winter wonderland. Watch as Mom & Daddy build a snowman, following the classical design. Then I'll lift my leg and let it go man, So all the world will know it's mine-mine-mine! First I'll mark, on the fence post, 'Round the yard, make a quick coast; "Stay off of this turf, it's MY piece of earth, Marking up my winter wonderland." I have spread those riches in 3 directions, including downunder. (with credits) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Robin Hood

RE: Food items - Canada to USA

Can anyone tell me where I left my car keys? Just kidding! Beef is now OK which should resolve the pet food issue as well because it was beef by-products that had them concerned with the pet food. Re. pet food, many pet foods have other protein than beef, especially poultry. The most recent example I know for something that had the pet food confiscation regulation being enforced regularly was avian flu in Texas and British Columbia at the same time. There was Bird flu in Asia last year, so watch what's happening in the world on that one and get your pets on a food that you can buy in either country. :C
